1999 Cobra Mustangs

The 1999 SVT Cobra Mustangs brought about another change in the classic muscle car... an Independent Rear Suspension, that came to be referred to simply as the IRS. This was the first year SVT used an IRS on the mustang and depending on who you ask... it was either loved or hated! My own experience with it was not good, and the rear tie rods, used for adjusting the toe on the back of the car often came loose after hard driving, which resulted in the rear tires getting toed in or out, making the car seem to dog-walk down the road.
320 HorsePower or Not?
Along with the IRS in the 99 model, Team SVT was quickly questioned about some horsepower issues on the new Cobra. From the factory, they claimed 320 hp, yet many buyers found the 4.6 liter, 32 valve engine lacking the advertised ratings. Ford was forced to recall the cars and rework the heads and intake on the 1999 Cobra, to achieve the rated horsepower.
If you are the owner of a 99 Cobra, you can tell if your car had the horsepower "fix" as it was called, by looking on the drivers side of your cylinder head. If there is a bright green dot on it... you are likely good to go! You can also call the SVT team and give them your VIN number, they will have the records.
