Mustang enthusiasts in the late 1990’s began to notice the new models seemed to be underperforming their stated 320 horsepower potential. On the dynamometer the numbers weren’t adding up, and on the track, the rival Chevy Camaro Z28SS, also boasting 320 horses, was smoking the Cobras. Finally, the Ford SVT engineers ‘fessed up – the extra ponies had fled the pasture.
The 2001 Cobra Mustangs were redesigned to fix the problem, and the fix worked (and earlier models were recalled and corrected). Tests at the track and dynos proved it – in fact, the 2001 Cobra Mustangs were turning out sizzling 13.5 quarter miles.
The 281-cube 32-valve V8 makes the full 320 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, with a robust 317 foot pounds of torque at 4500 rpm. The 2001 Cobra Mustangs are agile, athletic, and finally, all they were meant to be.
