1978 King Cobra

1978 saw the end of the Mustang II era, and the 1978 King Cobra Mustang was the most notable car produced in the line that year. The 78 Cobra was a step in the right direction for Mustang, which suffered a rash of underpowered, gas-saving rides earlier in the decade. The King Cobra design brought power back into the equation, and was the start of a turnaround that continues today.

The King Cobra Mustangs featured a nifty, and super quick 302 cubic inch, 5.0 liter V-8 capable of producing a respectable 134 horsepower. It was the speediest Mustang in years, and Mustang aficionados were very appreciative. The four-speed manual transmission was smooth and dynamic, and a redesigned suspension offered better handling overall.

Along with the pep in its step, designers offered this new look Mustang with the famously large snake hood decal reminiscent of competitor Trans-Am’s screaming chicken decal. King Cobra decals also graced the doors and rear spoiler. These limited production vehicles appeared in 6 colors: Red, silver, black, white, brown and blue. The rear seat was split into two sections, a design change popular in the industry at the time.
